Really the only proper pop pilgrimage for Treme would be to move there. Creators David Simon and Eric Overmeyer seem intent on showcasing every corner of the Crescent City, from its most famous restaurants to the tiniest venue where anyone could play a trumpet before an appreciative crowd. For this installment we decided to visit the neighborhood that lent its name to the show: Treme. As Dave Walker points out above, the name Treme only seems like a misnomer, given that only a portion of the series takes place in that neighborhood. Because so much New Orleans music has its roots in Tremé, and because so much of the city's identity is tied to the music, it's as apt a title as anyone could dream up.Walker joined us for a walking tour of the neighborhood starting at St. Augustine's church, a place with a long, interesting history. It was founded in 1841 by free people of color, making it the oldest primarily black Catholic church in America. Its founders insured it would be welcoming to slaves by purchasing pews for them, a move that upset white parishioners. One of its most famous congregants, Homer Plessy, would go on to play a major role in the history of civil rights as part of the Plessy Vs. Ferguson Supreme Court decision. (He's buried in the nearby St. Louis Cemetery #1, subject of another Pop Pilgrims installment.) Others include jazz giant Sidney Bechet and Tootie Montana, a famous Mardi Gras Indian Chief.More recently, it's served as a symbol of neighborhood ...

SAMMY PENN: Born Morgan City Louisiana September 15 1902. Died Florida September 18 1969.

Let's start off a little differently this time: to me, the greatest New Orleans drummers for my pleasure were Baby Dodds, Sammy Penn and Cie Frazier. But Sammy had a wonderful second string to his bow. He sang with the same phrasing as the legendary Fats Domino, and with his big cigar and huge smile was a master entertainer.

Sammy's first job was in 1921 with Jake Johnson's band, then with Chris Kelly's Brass Band, Kid Rena's Brass Band and the legendary Eureka Brass Band. He was the mainstay of the Kid Thomas band for a quarter of a century.

You must understand that entertainment was the name of the game. With Sammy Penn and Joe "Twat" Butler, Kid Thomas Valentine had a showband. Singers, personalities and Thomas with his famous "bag of tricks" No wonder this band survived in New Orleans and then toured the world to represent the birthplace of jazz.

In a long interview with my friend Tom Stagg in his wonderful record shop "Good Rockin'" he describes Sammy Penn's drum kit as "ultra basic" A bass drum, a snare drum, a tom-tom and a cymbal attached to the bass drum. As Tom remembers, he drove the band relentlessly and with an amazing complexity of rhythmic sounds. This kit was simple but the rhythm was anything but!

This is Tom's recollection of the last weeks of his life. "Sammy returned from a doctor's appointment with the news that he had very high blood pressure and heart murmurs. Sammy played at Preservation Hall that night and after another session with the Kid Thomas Band loaded their gear on to a bus outside the Hall on St. Peters Street and set off with Sammy for a tour through Georgia to Florida. After only one concert, the bus returned to the Hall with only the driver, the road manager and the body of Sammy Penn.

Talking to Barry Martyn, he rates Sammy Penn highly in great drummers from New Orleans. Sammy played 4/4 on the bass drum and not the more familiar cut time of New Orleans drummers. George Lewis preferred that 4/4 sound and Joe Watkins played that way, but without the explosive accents and complex rhythms of Sammy Penn. Barry had the good fortune to sit in with the Kid Thomas Band and found that he could not hear himself and had to adjust his volume and style to suit the band.

So Sammy Penn was the drummer for Kid Thomas and his Algiers Stompers and spent the major part of his playing life with that band. As Barry Martyn said "When Joe James and Sammy died the band would never be quite the same again"

To hear him at his best, you should listen to "Kid Thomas Valentine Creole Jazz Band on American Music AMCD 49 and "Kid Thomas and his Algiers Stompers" on Riverside OJCCD 1833-2. My great joy is actually seeing the man in action on a DVD of the December Band produced by Big Bill Bissonnette (possibly still available by contacting him on his Jazz Crusade website - jazzcrusade.com).

Sammy Penn was a one-off and we are lucky to have records to listen to. In Australia, the late great Peter Clohesy was influenced by him and in Europe both Keith Minter, Emile Martyn and Chris Marchant show signs of having listened to this "original".

My next opus will be an interview with Les Muscutt -a superb banjo player from the U.K. who made a huge impression on the New Orleans jazz scene. Due to ill health, he retired recently and I am sure you will find his story interesting! P.S. I personally have dined at the there several times, and it is one of my favorite restaurants. They have some of the finest recipes in the country. If you are thinking about making a visit, here are five recipes you should consider ordering on your visit.

My first recommendation is the Louisiana Chicken Pasta. I know that a chicken pasta recipe doesn't sound like an original idea, but you need to trust me on this one. If you like chicken, and you like pasta, you need to order this delicious entrée. The official website describes this menu item as follows: "Parmesan Crusted Chicken Cutlets Served Over Pasta Tossed with Mushrooms, Peppers and Onions in a Spicy New Orleans Style Sauce." The spicy New Orleans Style Sauce made all the difference for me. The sauce isn't as spicy as you might think, so don't be scared away from this dish if you don't like spicy food.

My second recommendation is for those of you who love chicken but aren't in the mood for pasta. You definitely need to try the Orange Chicken. Many of you have probably tried the Orange Chicken at Applebee's. If you like the Orange Chicken at Applebee's, you are going to love the Orange Chicken at The Cheesecake Factory Restaurant. This recipe is listed on their specialties menu and includes white rice covered with invigorating Sweet and Sour Orange sauce.

My third recommendation is the Shrimp Scampi. If you're into shrimp or seafood, this is the choice for you. This recipe is served with Angel Hair Pasta. If you go to the official website, there is a photo of this delectable recipe!

My fourth recommendation is the Pasta Da Vinci. This is one of the most popular menu items at the Cheesecake Factory. Customers are always asking about this recipe for good reason. You can find the recipe for this delicious recipe on various websites across the internet. The menu description for this fine entree states that the Pasta Da Vinci includes "Sauteed Chicken, Mushrooms, Onions and Garlic in a Delicious Madeira Wine Sauce Tossed with Penne Pasta and Parmesan."

My final recommendation includes another popular entrée. Evelyn's Favorite Pasta is named after the restaurant founder Evelyn Everton along with her husband Oscar Everton. This recipe is really all about the vegetables. If you like pasta and vegetables, this may be the best choice for you. The dish includes many ingredients including Penne, Garlic, Olive Oil, Roasted Eggplant, Olive oil, Roasted eggplant, Pine nuts, Kalamata olives, Sun-dried tomato, Broccoli, Peppers, and Parmesan cheese.

If you are planning to go to the Cheesecake Factory, be sure to block out a few hours of time. I recently went there on a Saturday afternoon about 5 pm, and there was a 45 minute wait! The wait is surely worth it, but make sure you have plenty of time to eat! I could go on and on about the desserts at Cheesecake Factory, but I will save that for another article.
